Implants Provide Alternatives to Dentures

by | Feb 8, 2015 | Blog

Are you disgusted with your dentures? We don’t blame you at all! Even with the fantastic denture options available right now, there is a limit to what those false teeth can provide. There isn’t enough stability for dentures to be truly effective, and we hate to see our patients suffer because of that!

Ultimately, you are the one suffering! You don’t feel confident with your smile, you can’t eat all of the foods that you love, and you’re always worried that something terribly embarrassing is going to happen! We understand!

At Smile Glen Ellyn, we are one of the very few dentist offices in the country to offer a wide variety of alternatives to traditional dentures. We are going to talk about four implant-related solutions today! Let’s get started!

Implant Retained Dentures
The first level of improvement offered by implants is the retained denture. In this solution, we place two to four implants around your gums that will act as anchors for your dentures. We will fit your dentures with small appliances that lock into the anchors for an immediate and obvious improvement!

Patients love this option because it is so easy and effective. It is not the most secure option, however, which is why many of our patients need to select one of the other options yet to be detailed.

Implant Supported Dentures
The next level of improvement comes in the form of an implant supported denture, also known as overdentures. In this procedure, we actually install metal bars on the arches of your teeth. These bars are held with four to six implants each giving a much more secure hold.

Your dentures are fitted with connecting appliances and click into place on the bars. The fit is much more comfortable than the implant retained solution, and the stability is better. Implant supported dentures are able to return your bite strength to your natural level while still giving you the ability to remove your teeth, if you desire.

Implant Supported Bridges
Next, we will go one step further to the implant supported bridge option. The first two options were still removable dentures, but implant supported bridges are not dentures! They are natural-looking teeth! The bridge itself is the entire arch of your smile and is held in place by several implants spaced throughout the arch.

We consider this solution the ultimate solution because it is so completely comfortable! You will retain the ability to eat, speak, and function as you would with your natural teeth. When you chew, the force is distributed around your entire mouth which helps your implants stay comfortable and stable.

All-on-Four and Teeth in a Day
The All-on-Four solution is one of the most popular implant solutions right now because patients love knowing that they can walk in with nothing and walk out with a completed smile! It is fantastic for patients. We are able to replace both arches in a single appointment. You can walk out and prepare your favorite meal that evening!

You might be wondering why this isn’t the ultimate solution! The reason is simple. All-on-Four solutions only use four implants, which puts you at a higher risk for a failed bridge. Plus, this procedure is more expensive, so many of our patients find better results at a better price with the implant supported bridge solution.

There are many things to consider regarding implant solutions. The good news is that any one of these solutions will be better than living with traditional dentures slipping and sliding around in your mouth!
