Preventative Care & Sealants

Take a Lesson from Whoopi Goldberg about Dental Health!

Dental implants, bridges, and crowns are a terrific alternative for replacing missing teeth and dentures. What I always tell all my patients is that the best implant is their normal natural teeth.

Most people know Whoopi Goldberg well for her many movies and presence on the TV show The View. On show The View, Whoopi relates her recent dental experiences with gum disease and losing teeth.

Whoopi says wisely “If you’re not taking care of your teeth you’re not taking care of your whole body—and it’s killing you!” ! Readers Digest reported recently that we are twice as likely to die of a heart attack, and 3 times to die of a stroke. There is also an increased incidence and severity of pneumonia and diabetes! She also relates that she avoided dental care even though she had good dental insurance. Dental fear should also not be a deterrent with all of the advances available in dental comfort and sedation!

Preventing future gum disease and tooth is important to your health.. We suggest you watch!

Remember:

Sealants help maintain teeth that are free of decay. Decay destroys the structure of the tooth. Each time a tooth is filled additional tooth structure is lost. Appropriate use of sealants will save time, money, and prevent discomfort associated with restorative dental procedures. Sealants are a monumental part of preventative dentistry!

How Long Will Sealants Last?

An original sealant will often last for a period of 5 years. The sealed teeth will be checked at each dental check-up, and reapplication is done when the sealant begins to wear off. Since teeth are most susceptible to decay when a patient is young, preventing decay during the first to fifteen years after a tooth erupts is critical.

Have Sealants Been Thoroughly Tested?

Yes! Throughout the United States sealants have been tested in controlled clinical studies. All studies show that sealants are: effective against tooth decay, easy to apply, inexpensive, and nontoxic. Sealants are not only approved, but are recommended by the ADA (American Dental Association).

How Are Sealants Applied?

Applying sealants requires no drilling or removal of the original tooth surface. First the tooth is dabbed with a mild acidic solution (similar in strength to vinegar or lemon juice). This roughens the tooth surface so that the sealant is able to form a strong bound. The sealant is painted onto the tooth, and flows into all exposed pits and grooves. After 60 seconds the sealant has hardened and now protects the tooth from bacteria and decay.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surface of the back teeth to prevent decay. Molars have irregular chewing surfaces with pits and grooves, which tend to trap food and bacterial debris. Sealants flow into these areas to prevent bacteria and decay from destroying the enamel.
